Let’s Talk About HL7® FHIR® at HIMSS15

Over the course of the last couple of years, AEGIS has played an active role in accelerating the development and adoption of the Health Level Seven (HL7) Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) specification as an integral author and contributor to the standard. FHIR combines the best features of existing HL7 standards with the latest web technologies to make interoperable healthcare applications dramatically simpler, easier, and faster to develop. FHIR continues to generate strong support within the healthcare community and signals a desire to move beyond traditional health record formats like CDA, CCD, and C32, toward streamlined XML and JSON representations coupled with lightweight RESTful services.

Through collaboration with industry developers, there has been an initiative to demonstrate and test FHIR Messaging in Clinical Decision Support Immunization Forecasting. The goal is to enhance the development and standardization of the FHIR Profile for immunization forecasting in support of a robust clinical quality framework (CQF). Active participants include AEGIS, HLN Consulting, Immunization Information Systems (IIS) and CQF communities. This community has been testing a working FHIR – Clinical Decision Support Immunization Forecasting Messaging prototype (leveraging the AEGIS WildFHIR) using developed and published test cases within the Developers Integration Lab (DIL). AEGIS and its collaborators are identifying Federal and commercial partners to test its recent implementation and extend this prototype at the next HL7 FHIR Connectathon.

We’re looking forward to talking about FHIR and other topics around interoperability at the upcoming HIMSS15 Conference & Exhibition.
